In the early 1980s several conferences addressed the issue of "emerging commonalities" in the information professions. The observations from the conferences were of contrary trends toward divergence, proliferation and diversification of information-related occupations on the one hand; and toward convergence–conceptually, technologically, and organizationally – on the other hand. These trends are even more explicit today, almost 35 years later. The advancement of information and communication technology, especially digitizing technology and social and information networking provide a great area of new interests among the information professionals. And these innovations have been the critical issues and challenges in the information professions.
The 5th A-LIEP (A-LIEP 2013) provides a platform for participants who are academicians, researchers, scholars, practitioners, and individualsto discuss, share, and debate on several issues and challenges facing the information professions in the digital age, with particularly emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region.
